چکیده

Abstract We propose a waveguide-based near-eye display featuring dual-channel exit pupil expander, which is composed of an in-coupler, relay gratings, and out-coupler. Unlike the conventional displays, whose field views are usually non-split or partially split, our expander able to evenly split view into two halves. The greatest benefit doing so that upper limit could be significantly increased. design rules for all components, including microdisplay, collimating lens, waveguide have been studied. refractive index dimension identified as factors view. In what follows, its key specifications recapitulated. Field 70° (diagonal), eye relief 15 mm, 20 × 9 mm2, modulation transfer function above 0.591 at 30 cycle/degree, contrast ratio 13, distortion 1.38%.

Diffractive exit-pupil expander for display applications.

Two-dimensional binary diffraction gratings can be used in wearable display applications as exit-pupil expanders (EPEs) (or numerical-aperture expanders) to increase the size of the display exit pupil. In retinal scanning displays the EPE is placed at an intermediate image plane between the scanners and the display exit pupil. A focused spot scans across the diffractive EPE and produces multipl...

Design of achromatic surface microstructure for near-eye display with diffractive waveguide

Dispersion problem has always constrained the development of see-through near-eye displays with diffractive waveguide. Here, we propose a design method and optical systems for achromatic surface microstructure composed with a triple-carved-sub-grating. The triple-carved-sub-grating with specified period is designed based on rigorous coupled wave theory, corresponding to Red, Green and Blue (RGB...

Dynamic exit pupil trackers for autostereoscopic displays.

This paper describes the first demonstrations of two dynamic exit pupil (DEP) tracker techniques for autostereoscopic displays. The first DEP tracker forms an exit pupil pair for a single viewer in a defined space with low intraocular crosstalk using a pair of moving shutter glasses located within the optical system. A display prototype using the first DEP tracker is constructed from a pair of ...

Design of see-through near-eye display for presbyopia.

We propose a compact design of see-through near-eye display that is dedicated to presbyopia. Our solution is characterized by a plano-convex waveguide, which is essentially an integration of a corrective lens and two volume holograms. Its design rules are set forth in detail, followed by the results and discussion regarding the diffraction efficiency, field of view, modulation transfer function...

Slim near-eye display using pinhole aperture arrays.

We report a new technique for building a wide-angle, lightweight, thin-form-factor, cost-effective, easy-to-manufacture near-eye head-mounted display (HMD) for virtual reality applications. Our approach adopts an aperture mask containing an array of pinholes and a screen as a source of imagery. We demonstrate proof-of-concept HMD prototypes with a binocular field of view (FOV) of 70°×45°, or to...
